In most cases, acoustic emission testing is meant for large material or structure testing. The tested object can be in one dimensional, e.g. pipelines, two dimensional, e.g. metal or fiber plates, and three dimensional, e.g. pressure vessels, oil storage tanks, concrete structures and bridges. As such, multichannel AE systems are needed in order to cover entire areas of interest of the testing structure and to obtain accurate AE location and statistical analysis for the integrity of the structure.

Physical Acoustics was the first company in the world to manufacture acoustic emission (AE) computer based multichannel systems. Starting with the early 70's, we introduced the Dunegan 1032 and the Trodyne MSCD. Both systems carried the complete workload of acoustic emission research and applications until the end of the 1970's. In the early 80's, Dunegan introduced the DART and DC-8000 and PAC introduced its venerable 3000/3002/3004 and 3000/SPARTAN series, the first truly independent channel and parallel processing AE system.
In 1981, PAC introduced the TRA-64, the first digital card for AE. The TRA series formed the start of the digital AE revolution that was completed with the first Digital Signal Processing (DSP) 16-bit truly AE system the AEDSP-32/16. The MISTRAS-2001 was introduced in 1995, during the European conference on NDT in Nice, France. Over the years, the SPARTAN series grew to PC-Based SPARTAN-AT and later on to SPARTAN 2000. For Small and more ergonomic AE, PAC introduced the LOCAN (2-16 channels) series that was based on SPARTAN technology.
The new generation of DSP parallel processing multichannel systems from PAC perform as industry standard simultaneous process of both features and waveforms. Customers have choices of AE systems for price-performance capabilities. MISTRAS-2001 was followed by the DiSP (Digital SPARTAN-AT and SAMOS Variations of these systems enable the user to connect to notebooks and run on batteries under the "micro" name.

Depending on the application needs, the number of channels needed for testing vary along with the size of the parts or structures to be tested. A multichannel AE testing system can be two channels for leak detection and location in a section of a pipeline or over two hundred channels for an aircraft or chemical reactor testing.
